Collaborative Achievements
Amy Schiebel
Amy organized several science outreach events including:
Lab & Leisure series. Created by the Edgewood College Office of Science Outreach and about 100 college students participated in various activities including brewing beer and building a life-sized Tyrannosaurus Rex in the SON lobby. Sessions were led by Rachael Lancor (CGP), Louise Stracener (CGP), Jon Edmonson (BIO), and Laura Mitchell (BIO).
ROSE (Resources and Opportunities in Science Education) outreach project to African American parents. Created by the Edgewood College Office of Science Outreach. Science segments of the sessions led by Rachael Lancor (CGP), Laura Mitchell (BIO), Kelley Grorud (BIO), and Matt Havinghurst (CGP).
Conversations in Science series. Sponsored by Edgewood College‘s Office of Science Outreach partnered with the Center for Science Literacy and MMSD.
Sustainability Film Series and Breakfasts
Wisconsin Environmental Education Board (WEEB) grant awarded to develop augmented reality sustainability tour of Edgewood Campus and provide handheld units for tour.
Laura Mitchell
Laura participated in several science activities:
Introduction to Natural Science for Education I (NATS 104)—mentored student research projects, seed project with first graders at Campus School, participated in a research group concerning elementary ed science education
Lab & Leisure—guest speaker for Earth Science themed night, discussed paleontology and led activities, presentation and completion of life-sized (40ft long x 20 ft tall to hips) Tyrannosaurus rex made from styrofoam.
NOTE: T. rex took 250+ hours to construct, 300+ glue sticks, five van loads of styrofoam donated by American TV, about 20 students from both Edgewood College and MATC helped with construction; activity taught morphology, biomechanics, and engineering problem solving
Rose Project—guest Speaker for the Earth Science themed night, discussed geologic time, created a HUGE geologic timescale with attendees to convey the amount of time our planet has been around and how much of that time living organisms have been around
Edgewood Campus School Collaboration with Dan Toomey—giant inflatable cells project, presenting a talk at WSST in April with Dan Toomey on how to incorporate giant cell model construction in the classroom, will create a curriculum packet to accompany the talk
